Since taking the helm at Céline (now Celine) in early 2018, Hedi Slimane has made headlines by steering the French fashion house in drastically new directions. After adding menswear to the brand's portfolio, promising a couture collection in the future, and redesigning the New York flagship with a minimalist architectural concept, the bold yet elusive designer has entered yet another sector of the industry, teasing a fragrance launch on Instagram. The luxury brand has not released a fragrance since Vent Fou in 1964, but it seems all we have to do is get through fashion month before a new (and certainly viral) vision of Celine perfume arrives.
Under the name “La Collection Celine Haute Parfumerie,” the fashion house is releasing 11 new scents, all androgynous and versatile for both day and night. Each puff of perfume serves sophisticated grandeur through an enveloping cloud that mixes the brand's modern luxury with Slimane’s signature touch, and of course, the scent comes in an exquisitely sleek bottle to match. Featuring a black varnish cap and “Grand Siècle” moldings, the rectangular glass packaging asserts the designer’s modern, art deco influences. It’s a timeless new take on Celine’s storied modernity, and it surely satisfies our haute parfumerie cravings.
While this might be Slimane’s first perfume collection for Celine, fragrance is nothing new for the creative. While serving as the artistic director of Dior Homme 15 years ago, Slimane did a lot more than create the skinny suits that famously inspired Karl Lagerfeld to change his entire physique, as he released a number of scents that established the maison’s presence as a leader in the cologne market. Today, the designer's forward-thinking sense of smell is bringing his current house to fragrance prominence as well.
The French fashion label is also using the launch to open a new boutique dedicated to fragrance at 390 Rue Saint-Honoré in October. Starting early that month, the Haute Parfumerie collection will be available exclusively at Celine boutiques. Get ready to indulge in this modern opulence, because beauty fades but not when it's fragrance.
