Adut Akech wasn't born in Rome but Sudan. She grew up in Australia before starting her career in the United States and Europe, where she was noticed by Pierpaolo Piccioli. For the designer, who esteems himself Roman above all, there is "no need to be born in Rome to feel Roman." Adut Akech is the muse of a floral scent where jasmine is mixed with a hint of bourbon vanilla and background on woody notes.
Was becoming a model always a dream?
Adut Akech: Yes, since I was 11 years old.
What triggered it?
I had seen many pictures of top models, including Naomi Campbell. The images of the Victoria's Secret parades also impressed me a lot. I admired that universe.
Has model life matched your dreams?
For some things, yes, for others not. It is tough work that is not always perceived as such.
Do you have an olfactory memory?
The smell in my memory is that of khurma, a mixture of incense that my mother burns. This is a widespread practice in Sudan, supposed to chase evil spirits and bring harmony. When I have my mother on the phone, I imagine that smell, and I immediately feel better.
What does it mean to be the face of a perfume?
It's not a feat, but it's very exciting. The Valentino house is special for me, it's not just fashion, fashion shows.
How would you define Born in Roma?
It's classic Valentino, but with a twist. I like this bouquet of white flowers allied to wood, it's new. It is feminine, but with a strength that I like. It's the modern contrast that I appreciate the most. I have had perfumes before, but I like this one a lot.
What do you think about Rome?
It's a charming city, but my experience is a little reduced, as most of the time I see it through the windows of a car... I saw some incredible places in the city during the filming of the campaign.
Do you have any beauty tips?
Whatever the circumstances, when you travel, when you work, even tired, take the time to always clean and moisturize your face.
As travelling is a part of your job, do you have a favorite place?
I have a lot! I like all the cities.
And the campaign?
I also like nature, to walk in the countryside. I grew up in a small town, but nature was very present.
What do you think about social media?
It's essential to be able to share, I use them of course, but it's not always necessary.
How do you imagine your future?
I try not to think about it too much because we cannot predict anything. I am happy to just live from day to day. I am trying to achieve my goals, and many of them have already been accomplished.
