Paris, the capital of fashion, is naturally the theme CHANEL has chosen for Galeries Lafayette. The House has thus imagined an actual promenade along which visitors will rediscover the symbols of a city that is so dear to CHANEL. From the atrium to the top floor, this path is punctuated with two installations and six pop-up spaces that reinterpret the Parisian décors of CHANEL runway shows. An unexpected leitmotif accompanies this stroll: the beach. In reference to the Spring-Summer 2019 Ready-to-Wear collection, very light sand and transparent Plexiglas steles and aqua weave through each one of these Parisian “postcards”.
Positioned in the centre of the atrium on the ground floor, a majestic Eiffel Tower in pale gold metal soars upwards through the higher levels of the store. Or more precisely the foundations of the tower, truncated at its summit. Twenty mannequins have been installed around it on the sand or appear to admire the view from its first floor. These Parisiennes are dressed in key silhouettes from the collection: jackets and suits in tweed, jersey cycling shorts, cropped shirts in poplin cotton, black dresses in tulle and chiffon... Further on, a perfume pop-up presents LES EAUX DE CHANEL line, named Paris-Deauville, Paris-Biarritz and Paris-Venise.
Beneath the monumental staircase, on the first floor, a Morris column with a silted base, a few signs and eight mannequins recreate a typically Parisian street scene. Gold from top to bottom, the column doesn’t announce a performance but displays a summery landscape of sea and sky. A view to match the urban silhouettes of the collection that so joyfully embody the spirit of a Paris in summer.
On the second floor we discover the six pop-up spaces. Visible from the atrium, these islets framed with brass-coloured brushed steel seem to be suspended in mid-air. With a surface area from 9 to 24m2, the visitor can step inside and discover the store in all its verticality through the glass walls lightly curved and covered with transparent gold leaves. Inside, drawn frescoes evoke the Parisian places linked to the history of CHANEL runway shows: the terrace of a café, the Seine, its quayside and its book sellers, the bridges, the pathways through a park and 31 rue Cambon, the legendary address of the House. As with each stop on this promenade through town, a sandy beach surges from the floor and Plexiglas steles with aqua blue undulations, placed like floating furniture, add a fresh note. Wide-cut denim trousers, big pullovers, blouses, dresses and suits in tweed, swimsuits, hats and baseball
caps, skateboards, bags and vanity cases as well as mules and costume jewellery are installed in harmony with the décor of each space.
In addition to these ephemeral installations are two permanent spaces on the second floor, one dedicated to CHANEL shoes, from the ballerina flats and two-tone slingbacks to the espadrilles, and the other to CHANEL watches. Goossens jewellery is present on the first floor, while hats by the Maison Michel and Scottish cashmere by Barrie can be discovered on the second floor.
Discover CHANEL at Galeries Lafayette Champs-Élysées from March 28th 2019. The pop-up décors will be present until April 21st 2019.
