While the talk of the town for many in Paris this fashion week were the three-toed shoes in Matthew Williams' debut fashion collection for Givenchy, the Alyx-founder made even more of a statement with his backsides. Referencing founder Hubert de Givenchy's love of the cutout (see: Audrey Hepburn's infamous LBD in Breakfast at Tiffany's), Williams debuted open-backed gowns that made more than just one statement.

Perched just above the buttocks, a first-ever Givenchy G-string struck a particularly subversive note, and not only for its Tom Ford Gucci-era sex appeal. The whale tale—a trend of the early aughts made famous by Paris Hilton and recently brought back by Hailey Bieber at the 2019 Met Gala—is an overtly feminine style. Clashed between the rest of Williams collection, which easily flows between both sides of the gender closet, the Givenchy G-string a detail of contrasting enchantment. What exactly is Williams trying to say with this song and dance, and lock, and key? Here's to more hints at finding out.
