Interview: Sophie Hersan, co-founder of Vestiaire Collective

In 10 years, Sophie Hersan, co-founder at Vestiaire Collective, has transformed the second-hand online sales site into a real temple of vintage online fashion, where Cara Delevingne, Emma Watson or Kim Kardashian sell the most beautiful pieces of their wardrobe exception.

What is your best memory of those first 10 years at the head of Vestiaire Collective?

Our international expansion and the change of name — Vestiaire de Copine has become Vestiaire Collective! And a memory which is always present in my mind: the opening of our offices and operations in New York, in the Chelsea district: we were watching the city lit and noisy on the rooftop of our hotel, when my partners and I exclaimed: "American Dream! We are there!" It was the start of a series of international openings: Paris, London, New York, then Milan, Berlin and Hong Kong.


What trends have you seen emerging in vintage in 10 years?

There is currently a particular interest in the archives and past collections that inspire the collections. We have noted for several years the emergence of unsigned pieces. Our community focuses more on the piece than on the brand.


Which are vintage must-have bags?

They are iconic, timeless bags that will keep their value over time, the original pieces that inspire current collections such as the oblique canvas by Dior, Celine logos and Louis Vuitton monogram bags, the brands that are very desirable today like Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Loewe.

Which brands clearly stand out in terms of vintage items?

Gucci, Valentino, Saint Laurent, Hermès, Chanel, Maison Margiela, Christian Dior, Burberry, Celine and Louis Vuitton are in high demand.


Which current fashion item will become a vintage must-have in 10 years?

I am thinking of the collections of Demna for Balenciaga, Alessandro Michele at Gucci, Louise Trotter at Lacoste, Anthony Vaccarello at Saint Laurent, Off-White collaborations by Virgil Abloh and Louis Vuitton, Raf Simons at Calvin Klein, Matthew Williams at Alyx Studio as well as the collabs of this decade: Suprême x Louis Vuitton or Sacai x Nike.


How does the platform intend to evolve in the next 10 years?

We encourage our community to connect, get inspired, animate the platform. This year we have reduced our commission. This allowed us to acquire new sellers and accelerate their sales. We also launched the direct delivery service in Europe for purchases below € 200 at launch. Buyers have the choice to receive their product directly from our recommended and expert private sellers: a cheaper offer for the buyer, faster and more eco-responsible. We wish to continue our international expansion by giving our community more autonomy via new tools, while maintaining the quality of the items offered and their authenticity.
