Opening Ceremony Spring 2019

The brand's collaboration with Sasha Velour provided for an over-the-top collection, along with some major drama.

Opening Ceremony always has a little more fun with their collection premieres than most, and this season was no exception. For Spring 2019, creative directors Carol Lim and Humberto Leon collaborated with Sasha Velour on "The Gift of Showz," a runway-performance hybrid which featured a cast of over 50 in custom OC looks on Sunday evening. The show was a celebration of drag culture, so its creators decided to forgo traditional models in favor of performers who had some creative license within the brand's given materials. The resulting collection got really over-the-top: think a floor-length, neon yellow coat on top of overalls featuring teddy bears and rainbows, or a black pantsuit with a "blazer" that stopped at the waist, showing off a buttoned bra top. Socks with ugly sandals appropriate for our current time were everywhere, as was bedazzled netting.

Even more maximalist than the collection itself were the show and its attendees. The cast showed off their looks in full-blown drag performances, which resulted in the event lasting two hours. Christina Aguilera was a featured guest, and the front row included Nicki Minaj, Troye Sivan, Awkwafina and Kelly Rowland. Tekashi 6ix9ine attended, which provoked gossip not only because he plead guilty in 2015 to using a child in a sexual performance, but because he's inserted himself into Minaj's New York Fashion Week drama. After Cardi B threw a shoe at the Queen rapper at the Bazaar Icons Party on Friday, 6ix9ine took both sides, first blasting "Bodak Yellow" at a concert, then attending Opening Ceremony with Minaj, who he's collaborated with in the past. This NYFW has been positively wild on the drama side, but at least the fashion world has something entertaining to discuss as everyone runs around to see collections. And honestly, there's no better show for this craziness than Opening Ceremony.
