L'Editorial: Retro Space Travel

Sometimes it feels like nostalgia has a monopoly on fashion these days. '80s statement blazers regularly come back in exaggerated ways, Kaia Gerber has risen to fame thanks in part to resembling mom Cindy Crawford, and Alessandro Michele has rebuilt Gucci using a mix of Renaissance detailing and quirky basics. But while all eyes have been on how fashion looks to the past, several designers have quietly built a sartorial movement that envisions the future. Marine Serre has created an LVMH Prize-worthy brand on a concept she dubs "Futurewear," Raf Simons brought an otherworldly vision to Calvin Klein over two years as creative director, and Louis Vuitton's latest collection brings heritage craft to space-inspired structure. To celebrate these visions, photographer Alex Black and stylist Natalia Zemliakova brought Spring 2019's most forward-thinking pieces into a story that transcends time and place with starry backdrops, rocky voids, and a voluminous hairstyle. The photos are reminiscent of classic space-age inspiration, but they also undeniably take from more recent trends to revisit what might happen if non-astronauts finally get the option to take a vacation away from Earth.
